In my quest to try and draw this place from as many different vantage points as possible, I am slowly working my way through every cafe in town. That will end up being a feat in itself as there are so many to choose from. Record unemployment has meant that people will try their turn at whatever they can in order to make a living and survive. Clothes and shoe shops in prime locations in the centre of town have been replaced by cafes and bakeries. The competition is steep and yet the need is ever present. Spending time with friends sharing cheese pies and savouring perfectly made cappucinos has become our primary entertainment. The ceremony of sitting for tea or coffee preserves the feeling of being civilised, in what has become a barbarous time. Just like that, in one simple act.
The sidewalks at regular intervals have tall tables and chairs, all beckoning with the promise of a comfortable view of urban traffic. Perfect for a compulsive sketcher. I really couldn't have wished for anything better for my 2014 drawing escapades.
Στην προσπάθειά μου να ζωγραφίσω αυτήν την πόλη από όσες πιο πολλές γωνιές μπορώ, έχω αρχίσει σίγα σιγά να περνάω από όλες τις καφετέριές της. Αυτό κι αν δεν θα είναι τελικά κατόρθωμα μιας και υπάρχουν τώρα πια τόσες πολλές για να διαλέξεις. Η κρίση έκλεισε τα μαγαζιά με ρούχα και παππούτσια και μας έφερε καφέδες και φούρνους. Ο συναγωνισμός είναι τεράστιος, όπως φαίνεται να είναι και η ανάγκη. Η κύρια διασκέδασή μας πια είναι ένας καφές και μια τυρόπιτα ακόμα και σε παγκάκι. Η τελετουργία του να κάτσεις για έναν καφέ διατηρεί την αίσθηση πολιτισμένου ανθρώπου σε μια όλο και πιο βάρβαρη εποχή. Έτσι, με μια απλή πράξη.
Τα πεζοδρόμια γέμισαν ψηλά τραπέζια και καθίσματα, προσφέροντας μια αναπαυτική θέα ανάμεσα στην κίνηση της πόλης. Ιδανικές συνθήκες για μία τακτική σκιτσογράφο. Δεν θα μπορούσα να είχα φανταστεί κάτι καλύτερο για τις σχεδιαστικές αναζητήσεις του 2014.
